- Expect something HUGE from Simrek in the very near future!!! We promised not to divulge any trade secrets, but we just had to give you folks a heads up:
MerCruiser’s new policy: If an aftermarket component causes a failure, or in this case leads to corrosion damage... our warranty will not cover the damage/failure". Also, for SeaCore product "under no circumstances should the surface of the finish be damaged or it will corrode and there will be no warranty".
The guys at Simrek are once again going to change everything about the drive cooler industry. If you are considering putting a drive cooler on a brand new drive, wait until Simrek introduces their new line-up. In order to solve the corrosion issues on the Bravo IIIs, MerCruiser is changing the finish on their drives from paint to power coating, and they are no longer going to “look the other way” when it comes to piercing their new finish with after market add-ons. Drilling holes in the anti-cavitation plate will now void the corrosion warranty.
Please read and understand the following story that is in every Introduction to Marketing and Political Science text book ever printed:
. P.T. Barnum is considered to be one of the greatest marketing geniuses that ever lived. He once purchased a load of salmon at a very attractive price without actually seeing the product. He later discovered that the reason for the bargain was because the salmon that he was how trying to resell was white in color instead of the pink that people were used to seeing.
. Fearing that their was little or no demand for white salmon, Barnum's answer was to print on the outside label, "Fresh Salmon - guaranteed no to go pink in the can".
- With all do respect to P.T. Barnum, let's start out by saying, NOT EVERY BOAT NEEDS A STERN DRIVE COOLER. Actually, a rough guess would be 25% of them actually need one. That number seems to be grow with the rapid increase in popularity of the Bravo III. Benfits range from purely cosmetic; "I want something shinny for my drive" or " I hate cleaning off the white chalky deposits; to "my drive oil bottle keeps overflowing" or "I just spent over $1,500 to have my drive rebuilt".
. The first thing that you will need to do is to determine whether or not you need a stern drive cooler. The Market is now full of different drive coolers and most, if not all, are for MerCruiser drives. OMCs and Volvo drives don't seem to have the overheating problems that the MerCruisers do. So if someone is trying to sell you a "cooler" for your OMC or Volvo drive it's probably just a gimmick. So if you are not sure if you need a cooler for your MerCruiser drive, go to the "Do I need one" page to help you decide.
- Then you will need to figure out which ones are gimmicks and which ones will actually cool your drive. There are a lot of "drive coolers" out on the market today, all claiming to be the "best". You should first go to the "Cooler Physics" Page to learn about what it takes to properly cool a stern drive. Then go to the “Cooler History” page to hear about the evolution of the drive cooler. You should also check out the Flawed Designs Page to help you spot the gimmick drive coolers from the systems that will work well for you and last for years. Last but not least, check out the false claims page. The claims that are being made by some drive cooler manufacturers are quite amazing, and sometimes even dishonest. Remember, there are no truth police. These claims are only dishonest, not illegal. So, "let the buyer beware"!!
